Tim Tebow and his famous John 3:16 Eye Black
Tim Tebow (born August 14, 1987)- Heisman Trophy winner and former starting quarterback for the Denver Broncos. Timothy Richard Tebow was born in 1987 to a missionary family. His strong and vocal Christian faith makes him both the idol of many, and the target of many detractors. His style of football is also a point of contention among many football analysts and fans. Tim Tebow has been described by other players as a Quarterack with the philosophy (and physique) of a linebacker. He excells at the option-type play, in which the quarterback keeps the ball (as opposed to passing the ball), and becomes, in effect, another running back. His versatility is apparantly one aspect of his play that led the New York Jets to trade draft picks to acquire Tebow in a trade on March 21, 2012.

At the University of Florida, Tim Tebow was the back-up quarterback, but did contribute to the University of Florida Gators as they won the BCS national championship during the 2006 NCAA football season. Tebow moved up to become the Gators' starting quarterback for the 2007 season. Consequently, Tebow entered the record books as he became the first player in college football history to both rush and pass for 20 or more touchdowns in a single season. As recognition of his success, Tim Tebow became the first college sophomore to win the Heisman Trophy. Following his Heisman season, in 2008 Tim Tebow led Florida to a 13-1 record and a second national championship in the span of three years. Tebow was named the offensive MVP of the national championship game. During Tim Tebow's senior year, his Gators once again finished with a 13-1 record in 2009. As a college quarterback, perhaps Tim Tebow's greatest claim to fame was not the national championships, nor his Heisman Trophy win; what earned him name-recognition in college football and beyond, was his vocal and public means of showing his Christian faith to the world. Every game, the eye-black on his face would feature a Bible verse.
Tim Tebow was drafted in the first round of the 2010 NFL draft. Tebow was the 25th overall draft pick in the draft, selected by the Denver Broncos.
Tim Tebow in the act of "Tebowing" to the Lord
Tim Tebow spent his first NFL season as a back-up quarterback, and part-way through his second season, in 2011, Tebow was promoted to the starting quarterback job. As of Week 14 of the 2011 season, Tebow's record as the starting QB stood at an amazing 7-2.
As with his college career, Tebow's public affirmations of faith drew praise, as well as derision in the mainstream media. In November, 2011, Saturday Night Live (SNL) aired a skit poking fun at Tebow and his faith. See the SNL Tebow Skit below.
Saturday Night Live pokes fun at Tim Tebow and his faith
Tim Tebow finished the 2011 regular season with a career quarterback rating of 75.1, a rather low number. However, Tebow's leadership of the Denver Broncos, along with the confusion that the option offense creates for opposing defenses, propelled the Broncos to an AFC West Division Championship and a playoff appearance at home against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Broncos won the NFL's first ever non-sudden death overtime playoff game on January 8, 2012. Ironically, the Broncos actually won the game in sudden death mode by scoring on their first possession with an 80-yard Tim Tebow pass to Demaryius Thomas to score the game-winning touchdown. Interestingly, some analysts noted the significance of the number of yards Tim Tebow passed for in this game (316), is the same as his favorite Bible verse (John 3:16).
Tebow Is Traded to the New York Jets
In March, 2012, quite a bit of drama swirled around the quarterback position throughout the NFL, with free-agent signings, ourtight releases, trades, and rumors of trades. The biggest quarterback story of of the 2012 NFL off-season revolved around the fate of future Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning, who missed the 2011 season with a neck injury. After Manning's release by the Indianapolis Colts, many teams openly coveted Manning's talents, and he interviewed with several teams. On March 20, 2012, Peyton Manning signed a five-year deal to quarterback the Denver Broncos. Upon Manning's signing, and the announcement that he would (obviously), be the starting quarterback, Tim Tebow suddenly became expendable and marketable in the trading circles of the NFL. On March 21, 2012, the Broncos and Jets announced the completion of a trade that sent Tebow to New York. Denver gained the Jets' 4th and 6th round draft picks for 2012, while Denver also got the Jets's 7th round draft pick for 2012. New York announced that Tebow would once again be a backup quarterback, with incumbent quarterback Mark Sanchez retaining (for now), his starting job.
